Medway Council intends to present three options for public consultation, to be agreed at a meeting TODAY.

Option a) is to cut all nineteen centres

Option b) is to reduce them all to a single point of contact

Option c) is to create four 'superhubs' (this appears to be their preferred option), stripping neighbourhoods of grassroots centres on people's doorsteps when they really need them.

Time and again, Medway Council has pledged to keep these centres come hell or high water. Now, they are axing them, to pay for a festival. To celebrate a historical defeat at the expense of the present and future of our children.

Local parents across Medway are understandably heartbroken and outraged, and since the story broke in the news just five days ago (when the KM http://www.kentonline.co.uk/…/plans-to-close-childrens-cen…/ and BBC online http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-kent-39802511 picked it up), a demo was organised at Gun Lane Children's Centre and was picked up as the lead story on the BBC South East TV news on Saturday, featured on BBC Radio Kent, KMFM.

Crucially we are trying to rally people to come to the Council's Gun Wharf offices TODAY. A demo outside is planned for 10am (after the school run), and more importantly, people are being encouraged to attend the Cabinet meeting at 3pm. Note how it has been scheduled to clash with the school run.

This is where you come in. Many of you will have accessed these early years services in children's centres and the wonderful activities and support services they provided. You know what a lifeline they are for parents and young children alike. Please - support these events Today. Be the voice at 3pm when parents are collecting their children from schools and can't show up. Make these Councillors look you in the eye if they are going to sign off on denying people nineteen grassroots neighbourhood centres to pay for this festival. Turn up a few minutes early and report to reception at Gun Wharf, Dock Road, Chatham ME4 4TR.

These are peaceful protests, but we, as a whole community, we need to be heard.
