On 5 July 1948, the National Health Service came into existence. 70 years on, it continues to be there for patients and communities. The core values have stood the test of time: comprehensive care, free at the point of use, delivered on the basis of need rather than the ability to pay. The NHS remains our most popular national institution – the thing that makes us most proud of our country and it continues to come top when comparing it to healthcare systems which exist in other countries, for both fairness and efficiency. But we can never afford to take our NHS for granted. UNISON recognises that we need to continue to campaign to protect and defend our NHS. However, we also think it’s important to celebrate its achievements and everything it stands for. We are also celebrating the staff who work for the NHS – from the “Windrush” families who left their homes to come to the UK to work in this amazing new healthcare system, to the dedicated staff who are saving lives and caring for us today. UNISON is proud to represent the whole team of staff who work in the NHS and we believe that everyone, whatever their job, plays a vital role in patient care. These amazing staff are worth celebrating alongside the NHS itself. As the largest union in the NHS, we know that there has never been a more important time for us to stand together and defend our health service against the policies of this government. That’s why we are asking members, their families and their friends to join us at noon on Saturday 30 June 2018 at Portland Place, London W1 (nearest tubes Oxford Circus/Great Portland St) for a demonstration in support of our NHS. Let’s celebrate of course. But let’s also show our support for the NHS at a time when it is threatened like never before. A decade of under-funding, unnecessary reform and the opening up of the NHS to private companies has left our health service with overstretched staff who are struggling to meet the demands facing them. UNISON wants to see: - a publicly owned NHS that remains free for all at the point of use
- proper funding and proper staffing levels
- world class services for every community.

Due to the 2018 International Workers Memorial Day falling on a Saturday; this years event will take place on Monday 30th April 2018,11.45am at the UNISON Memorial Tree within the Rochester Castle Grounds.
A minutes silence will be observed at Noon. ============================================================== TUC National Demonstration 12.5.18 On 12 May, tens of thousands of people will assemble in London for a national march and demonstration. It will be a key moment in the fight for public services and an opportunity to show decision-makers that we're concerned for the public services we love – and the public are on our side. 11am meet at Victoria Embankment between Hungerford Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge. 12.10.17 Gun Wharf Demonstration 12.10.17 - 6pm A public demonstration against a three-year pay freeze for Medway NORSE staff has been called for Thursday 12th October 2017 at 6PM. This is one hour before the start of a full Medway Council meeting.
Medway Norse employees paid above the National Living Wage have not had a pay rise in three years. Due to inflation this has meant a pay cut.
Additionally those who have joined Medway Norse after it was set up are not receiving the sickness or holiday entitlements that Medway Council staff receive. This is not fair when they carry out work on behalf of the same Council.UNISON would encourage as many people as possible to support this demonstration and show solidarity and support for our members working for Medway NORSE.

There is a Full Council meeting at the St George's Centre at 7pm. We invite you to join us for the first half hour of that to support the challenging questions we are asking of Council. There are just TWO Council meetings left at which we can show the strength of our feelings - this one, and the decision making one on Tuesday 8 August. THIS MARCH AND THIS MEETING MATTER. Save Children's Centres in Medway --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 30.5.17 PROTEST SCRUTINY MEETING TONIGHT 6PM St Georges Centre Chatham Hosted by Save Surestart Children's Centres in Medway Medway Council are looking to cut costs by closing all 19 SureStart Children's centres and replacing them with four 'Superhubs' to serve the whole of Medway in the following areas:
Gillingham and Twydall
Luton and Rainham
Strood, Peninsula and Rochester West
Rochester East, Chatham and Walderslade...
We firmly believe that removing centres from the heart of their communites, where parents can walk to the centre, see a familiar face and get all manner of support with parenting and family life will be a huge loss to Medway families.
There is a significant risk to postnatal mental health, family stability, child preparedness for school and the excellent work that has been done to improve breastfeeding rates across the area.
The fact that the substantial cuts made just a few months ago will help to pay for commemorations of a 350-year-old naval defeat ist a kick in the teeth - we cannot trust that savings made by implementing the Superhub plan will be spent on key community services. Time and time again, Medway council have pledged to protect all 19 centres. Let's show them why it is so important they honour that pledge. At 6.30pm tonight, at the St George's Centre in Chatham, the Council is holding a Scrutiny Meeting. We have applied to have a panel of experts give evidence about why we need Sure Starts. About why we need them in neighbourhoods, not superhubs. We need you to go to this meeting in droves. We need you to car pool (or buses to Chatham Maritime stop quite close near by). We need you to show the Council why the cuts, as they stand, will be a disaster for communities. It's in half term. Take your kids. Take their tea in Tupperware. Take ipods and tablets with earbuds to keep them (and you!) entertained. If you have ever used a Children's Centre, if you have ever needed that Centre, now is the time to show it. Stand with us. Perinatal services are KEY to the wellbeing of mothers and subsequently their babies. Children's centres provide support through play sessions, where mothers can meet each other and know there will be a comfortable and safe space for their children.
Children centres also provide breastfeeding support! Currently there is a somewhere everyday of the week where a mum can get support. What will be the case after?
Children's centres have excellent outdoor play facilities! Cooking courses! Parenting classes! Antenatal appointments and classes!
We can't let them go for the sake of a tourist attraction!!! -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Medway Trades Council plan to raise public knowledge about the threat posed to the NHS by the Sustainability and Transformation Plans that are designed to cut £22bn from the NHS budget and further entrench the privatisation of health services. There will be a meeting this coming Wednesday at 7.30pm in the Honeybees Room at the Sunlight Centre in Richmond Rd Gillingham to organise activities in Medway during the coming weeks. The meeting is open to everyone who is opposed to cuts and privatisation of the NHS. Please come along. Every year more people are killed at work than in wars. Most don't die of mystery ailments, or in tragic "accidents". They die because an employer decided their safety just wasn't that important a priority. Workers’ Memorial Day (WMD) commemorates those workers. Workers' Memorial Day is held on 28 April every year, all over the world workers and their representatives conduct events, demonstrations, vigils and a whole host of other activities to mark the day. The day is also intended to serve as a rallying cry to “remember the dead, but fight for the living”. In 2017 International Workers Memorial Day will have the theme Good health and safety for all workers whoever they are and will focus on inequalities in occupational health and the role unions play in narrowing the inequalities gap. The TUC will particularly want to focus on the hidden and new GIG economies, the risks faced by migrant workers and the issues of gender and class.

Medina, who lost her father Tony to the asbestos cancer
mesothelioma. He was 42. Now with mum Maitea and brother Javier, 13,
and sister Nadine, 11, the family is backing calls for tougher
regulation and enforcement of workplace safety standards. It is not
just about injuries – work-related health problems kill at least 100
times the number as ‘accidents’ at work.

waiting until everyone had received their letters and had had a
chance to hear management's briefings before we called any union

The purpose of the meetings will be
to discuss the union's collective response to the consultation and
will be an opportunity to identify any further information we need

Clearly this is a highly
contentious and divisive issue as some of our members will clearly
win in this while some take massive hits to their income.
